About the Baptist Student Union
Our goal is to intersect lives with those in the collegiate community and to LEAD those college students, faculty, and staff to faith in Jesus Christ, to DEVELOP them as discples and leaders, and the CONNECT them to the life and mission of the Church.
LEAD them to faith in Christ, because according to scriptures, we have all fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23), and that Jesus says plainly that He is the only way to the Father (John 14:6).
We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God the Father sent his only son to satisfy that judgment for those who believe in Him. He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, and he was buried and rose from the dead. If you truly believe and trust this in your heart, receiving Jesus alone as your Savior, you will be saved from judgment and spend eternity with God in heaven.
DEVELOP deisciples and leaders, because that is what we are called to do in Matthew 28:
"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Sone and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Jesus is talking to his disciples (which is why it is important for us to know what it means to be His disciple) and He commands them to make disciples. Understanding the importance of this calling, we offer opportunities for studetns to grow as disciples through weekly worship services, small groups, and one on one discipleship opportunities for students who are looking for someone to disciple, or for students who are looking for someone to disciple them.
CONNECT them to the life and mission of the church because we believe that this is a natural overflow of a life lived loving God with our entirety. In Mark 12:30-31 Jesus answers the question "what is the greatest commandment" from a religious leader, saying:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself..."
As we walk through this process of discipleship, and strive to fulfill the great commandment by learning to love God with ALL of who we are, the overflow of our lives lived loving God in this way willl be a life lived loving others. We strive to fulfill this commandment through a variety of ministry and outreach opporunities on campus, in our community, and accross the world.
We also encourage involvment in a local church body during your years as a student at SEMO.
We are supported by local Baptist churches as well as our alumni, student parents and other friends of the ministry. They are all vital partners in our work. Our ministry is not only for people who are Baptists, we have students from many different faith backgrounds and we focus on two areas: 1) focusing on Jesus and living like HIM; and 2) fulfilling our mission to the Southeast Missouri State University community. Regardless of where your previous faith journey has taken you, we invite you to check out the BSU and see if God is leading you to this faith community.
Wherever you are from, whatever your interests are and wherever you may find yourself in your walk with Christ, the BSU at Southeast Missouri State University hopes that you will find a home with us and that we can make your college years not only memorable but life changing as well.
